How to Validate Your Android App Idea Before Closed Testing

· 4 min read

Closed testing isn't validation — it's a publishing gate. Validate before you spend the 14 days.

The cheapest validation tactics

  • Landing page test. Build a one-page site, run $50 of ads to the target audience, measure email signups.
  • Reddit discovery. Search r/AndroidApps and r/AppHookup for unsolved problems near your idea.
  • Competitor reviews. Read 1-star reviews on existing apps. The complaints are your feature backlog.
  • Manual prototype. Spreadsheet, Notion page, or webform that solves the problem without code.

What validation should answer

Will at least 100 people pay $5/month, or 10,000 use it free? If the answer's “maybe,” keep validating. If it's “no,” pivot before you build.

The order

Validate → build → closed test → launch. Skipping validation and going straight to closed testing means you might ship a polished app nobody wants.
