UserTesting vs Mutual Testing for Android Apps
· 3 min read
UserTesting and similar UX research platforms are great for what they do. They're not a substitute for the 12-tester gate.
What UserTesting is for
- Recorded user-research sessions on prototypes or live apps.
- Targeted demographic recruitment.
- Structured task-based feedback.
- Costs $30–100+ per session.
Why it doesn't satisfy Google's rule
- Testers aren't opted into your closed-test track.
- Their devices don't phone home to Google Play.
- Sessions end — no 14-day retention.
What to use for what
Use UserTesting for usability sessions on your live app post-launch. Use a mutual-testing community like BetaPod to clear the 12-tester gate. Different jobs, different tools.
